Ingram condemns proposed DPI job losses in far eastBy Craig Ingram - 21st July 2005 - Back to News Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the Minister for Agriculture, Bob Cameron, to guarantee that the jobs of local doggers employed by the Department of Primary Industries will not be lost under a proposed departmental restructure.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Ingram called on the Minister to guarantee that those positions in places like Orbost will be maintained to provide services to those communities.
"The proposed DPI structure has no catchment management officers east of Bairnsdale, which is about eight per cent of the state of Victoria," Mr Ingram said.
"Many areas of operation relating to Orbost, Cann River, Bonang, Deddick, Combienbar, Bendoc and Tubbut will be changed to be managed through Bairnsdale.
"It will be inefficient and offers no support to these rural communities. "I have condemned the DPI’s proposal and called on the Minister for Agriculture to guarantee that those positions in places like Orbost will be maintained, and to ensure that there are no cutbacks to Parks Victoria, which has been rumoured around East Gippsland over the past few weeks," Mr Ingram concluded.
