Take a minute to remember

Victorians are encouraged to pay their respects to our past and present servicemen and women on Remembrance Day on Friday.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said November 11 was an important day to pause and remember.

"On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month we observe one minute of silence," Mr Northe said.

"We pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars and peacekeeping operations."

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914 – 1918). In later years this day took on even greater significance as a day to pay respect to all those who have served in wars, and particularly to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mr Northe said a number of local towns would hold local commemoration services.

"People can pay their respects at a service or by pausing at 11am, wherever they are," Mr Northe said.

In the Morwell electorate many local services will be held, including:

  • MORWELL (10.45am) - Cenotaph, Corner Elgin and Tarwin Streets, Morwell
  • TRARALGON (10.30am) - War Memorial in the Kay Street Gardens, Traralgon
  • NEWBOROUGH (10.30am) - Cenotaph, Darlimurla Avenue, Newborough

  • "Victoria’s country communities have made immense contributions to war efforts for more than a century and suffered hardships and tragedy because of those contributions.

"It is important that we mark these sacrifices."
