Nuisance telemarketing on the rise: IngramResidents who are being inundated by vigorous telemarketing companies should be aware of the steps they can take to stop receiving unwanted telephone calls. By Craig Ingram - 5th September 2005 - Back to News The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, says there has been a marked increase of Gippsland residents contacting his office during past weeks seeking assistance on how to deal with these unwanted calls.
"It is very frustrating for businesses and residents alike to receive these calls, which often occur at the most inappropriate times," Mr Ingram said.
"Many people have contacted my office over recent months seeking advice on how to prevent being bothered by these companies.
"I have sought advice from Consumer and Business Affairs Victoria (CBAV) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to assist residents who are being bothered by telemarketers.
"From all reports, it is most likely that a number of the callers that have been contacting local residents are not Australian-based, but are representing companies that have offices in Australia.
"People should also be aware that it is most likely their conversation is being recorded and may become part of the agreement contract.
"If you are in doubt, tell the caller you are not interested and ask them not to contact you again.
"My office will gladly provide advice to those who want to take further steps to protect their privacy from telemarketers. "Legislation needs to be strengthened at a state and federal level so that people can be protected from unwanted telemarketing, without having to go to great lengths or expense for that protection," Mr Ingram concluded.
