Detox Your Home!

On Saturday, 5 December Bass Coast Shire residents have an opportunity to rid their homes of unwanted household chemicals for free.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th November 2009 - Back to News

Council’s Waste Management Officer, Peter Roberts said the collection day, organised in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, allowed residents to dispose of old and unwanted chemicals in an environmentally responsible way.

"All you need to do is take your household chemicals to the Bass Coast Shire Council Depot at Dunsmore Road in Cowes between 2pm and 5pm," said Mr Roberts.

"There will also be a collection in the morning at the South Gippsland Shire Council Depot at 80 Yarragon Road, Leongatha from 8am to 11am.

"Many household chemicals should not be disposed of through your kerbside collection as they can leach into the soil damaging the environment.

"We will be accepting things like insect sprays, pest poisons, household cleaners, garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, paint strippers and paints.

"Unfortunately we can’t accept chemicals used by businesses for commercial and industrial purposeses, motor oil, containers over 20 litres or 20 kilograms or empty chemical containers, farm chemicals, waste asbestos, ammunition or flares

"For a full list of what will and won’t be accepted log onto www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au or call us on 1300 BCOAST (226 278)," explained Mr Roberts.

For your own, your family and collection staff safety, the following measures should be taken when transporting the chemicals to the Depot:

· Ensure lids are tightly fitted.

· Place liquids on a tray or in a plastic bucket so any spills are contained.

· Pack powders and solids securely.

· Keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons.

· Keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials.

· Travel with your car windows down if carrying flammable or odorous materials.

· Double-wrap old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking.

Detox Your Home collections are held all year throughout Victoria. For a list of drop-off locations and times, contact Council's Waste Management department on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or visit www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.
