Reducing Stress For CarersA series of recent Senior’s Week forums were a great success in helping carers understand and reduce stress felt when looking after a person’s care and well-being. By Bass Coast - 21st October 2011 - Back to News During Senior’s week held from 2 to 9 October, Bass Coast Shire Council organised a speaker from Carers Victoria to hold two informative sessions in the Shire aimed at supporting our valued carers in the community.
Discussion at the forum Surviving carer stress– Understanding how stress affects you, at Inverloch Community Hub, recognised that the stress of being a carer may affect a person physically and emotionally.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Aged and Disability Strategic and Quality Coordinator, Sam Wightman said in the role of a carer, it is accepted that stress is a part of everyday life; however it can build up over time.
"Participants at the forum enjoyed the opportunity to discuss and explore what stress meant for them and were provided with some options for reducing it.
"At the forum, Speak Up and Speak Out, participants were provided with ideas and ways to advocate for improving the system for carers and those being cared for in individual situations," continued Ms Wightman.
"Carers had many valuable discussions and laughs during the forum and came away with a show bag of information on how to survive stress and advocate for improved services.
"The forums were run by Carers Victoria and those who missed out can still access resource information by visiting the Carers Victoria website," said Ms Wightman.
Bass Coast Shire Council also offers a Home and Community Care Service to residents of the Shire. This includes assisting with home care, personal care, home maintenance and respite care. For more information visit Bass Coast Shire Council website or phone 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
