Residents being sounded out on motor sports complexBy Latrobe City Council - 23rd August 2005 - Back to News In a pre-emptive move to gauge residents’ opinions in the pre-planning stage about a new motor sports complex south of the Princes Highway at Hernes Oak, Latrobe City Council has invited local residents to a public meeting on Saturday 3 September.
The meeting, being held on the corner of Black’s Track and Marretts Road Hernes Oak at 10.30am, includes a consultation session with representatives of Latrobe City, engineering firm GHD, and members of some of the motor sports groups likely to access the proposed facility.
Latrobe City’s manager City Relations, Mark Brady, stressed that the community meeting preceded the actual planning process. "This is additional consultation with the community prior to any plans being drawn up and submitted to Council for consideration," Mr Brady said.
"Latrobe City wants to engage the community in the very early stages of the potential project by inviting residents to meet the potential users and see where the proposed facilities may be built.
Mr Brady said that noise testing would be carried out as part of the consultation on the day. "Following the meeting with GHD and motor sports groups, test vehicles will be driven at the proposed venue to establish whether the noise generated can be heard by residents.
"We suggest residents return to their homes and listen to hear if the vehicle test noise is audible from their properties.
"While all vehicles are noise limited to 95 decibels through national regulations governing motor sports, we believe it is important that we test noise emissions from a resident’s perspective in a local setting.
"While this will not provide a definitive answer about noise levels it will provide a useful reference point. GHD will also conduct formal noise testing on the day.
"It is envisaged that after the consultation, a planning application will be finalised and submitted. This will then initiate a formal consultation process which will provide full details of the proposal to all residents and give them the opportunity to make submissions," Mr Brady added.
To avoid confusion, residents should be aware that a meeting is also being held later in the day in relationship to a proposed hillclimb circuit in Bill Schultz Drive Newborough.
Further details on the Hernes Oak motor sports complex meeting can be obtained from Mark Brady at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
