Ford V8 Supercar driver Steven Richards has today confirmed he will drive the famous ex works Ford Motorsport Escort RS1800 "IYK 000" at the Yokohama Alpine Rally Media Day.
In announcing the drive today Richards said that he was both excited and humbled to get the chance to drive such a unique and famous car. "This is an opportunity most drivers would jump at and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s also a great opportunity to acknowledge Ford Australia’s long and distinguished history in Australian motorsport" said Richards.
For those people not lucky enough to have seen IYK driven by multiple Australian Rally Champion Greg Carr in the early 1980’s this will be an especially rare treat. The car has been completely rebuilt over the last few months by current owner John Hadden who says it’s now in almost "brand new condition". He is looking forward to seeing the car driven by someone of the calibre of Richards. "Steve is a very professional driver although I must say I’m a little nervous but very excited at the prospect of this unique car once again hitting the dirt" said John.
While the Yokohama Alpine Rally media day is not open to the public you will be able to catch all the action at Pure Motorsport on the web. Ryan Jones from Pure Motorsport said he was doubly excited about the opportunity to cover Australia’s premier classic rally and now get some special footage of IYK 000 in action in the forest. Check out their coverage of the Yokohama Alpine Rally at http://puremotorsport.tv/ from Friday November 13th.
There will be a number of other unique cars keen to show their potential at the media day including the Porsche 911 of Sydney driver Jeff David, a Fiat Abarth driven by ex Holden Dealer Team star Wayne Bell and last Alpine winner Darryn Snooks will have his Datsun Stanza on hand as well.
