Melbourne Water's Operations Officer, Glen Winter discusses tactics with DSE

A crew of six people from Melbourne Water has recently been assisting the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Forestry Victoria with regeneration burning operations in the Thomson catchment.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 22nd March 2004 - Back to News

The Melbourne Water crews conducted two hand burns with departmental crews, using drip torches and assisting with keeping the burns within the coupe boundary.

Fire Management Officer at Erica, Geoff Kennedy said that Melbourne Water also provided their dozer and operator to help track any 'spotovers' past the control lines.

"The concept of Melbourne Water assisting us was to enhance their fire skills and for them to be conversant with DSE burning operations," Mr Kennedy said.

"This is a great opportunity for us all to work together and learn more about each others' skills and knowledge."

Melbourne Water will also be assisting DSE with the planned fuel reduction burning program in the catchment when weather conditions are favourable.
