Victorian Councillor Service Awards.

Cr Neville Goodwin received the honorary title of Mayor Emeritus for completing four terms as Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

Cr John Duscher received the honorary title of Mayor Emeritus for completing three terms as Mayor of the Borough of Wonthaggi prior to amalgamation, and another award for completing 20 years service as an elected councillor with Bass Coast Shire Council and the Borough of Wonthaggi.

The Victorian Councillor Service Awards have been established by Victoria’s peak body for local government, the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), to recognise the contribution of long serving councillors.

Presenting the awards last night MAV President, Cr Dick Gross said it was an opportune moment to reflect on the commitment of long serving councillors as all 79 councils go to the polls next month.

"Communities need dedicated individuals willing to give their time and energy to serve in the best interests of the people.

"Standing for council is a significant commitment in itself but to have dedicated so much of one’s life to public service signifies a remarkable contribution that deserves to be celebrated," Cr Gross said.

Bass Coast Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, congratulated Cr Goodwin and Cr Duscher on receiving their awards.

"Being a councillor is a demanding and often thankless task. It is important that we recognise the sacrifices our councillors frequently make in their personal and professional lives to fulfil this important civic leadership role," Mr Bawden said.

The Victorian Councillor Service Awards commenced this year and will be conducted annually. The honorary title of Mayor Emeritus is awarded to councillors that have served three or more terms as mayor and awards are given to councillors that have completed 15, 20 and 25 years service.
