Message From Inspector Chris. Major:
"While all aspects of crime are the subject of police attention, assaults, damage to property, burglary, theft of and from motor cars are the main focus of police in the Latrobe Police Service Area (PSA) this year. CBD safety committees in Traralgon and Morwell have been working in partnership to enhance safety in these licensed premises. We will target thefts of and from motor cars through structured local patrols.
Our priorities to address public safety and securing property include enhancing partnerships with shopping centres, licensed premises and safety committees, promoting crime prevention initiatives, conducting highly visible mobile foot and bicycle patrols in high-risk areas and exploring options for installation of CCTV's in high-risk areas.
The community also has a responsibility to help police keep the crime rate down. Be alert and report any suspicious behaviour and lock your vehicles, sheds and garages to avoid any opportunistic crime. Removing valuables from vehicles or concealing items that can be readily removed are also ways to help avoid being a target for crime.
We will continue to address hoon behaviour through the use of media, enforcement and the very successful ‘Dob In a Hoon’ program. We have seen reductions in the number of fatalities and serious collisions, but any death on our roads is unacceptable and we will continue to work to ensure drivers maintain their focus and avoid becoming another statistic".
FIRE SAFETY - HEATERS:
The CFA experiences an increase in the number of house fires during the winter months caused by heating appliances. Be they gas, electric or solid fuel.
Here is some good advice to avoid fires caused by heaters at home.
-
· When your heater is installed ensure the manufacturer’s instructions are followed.
-
· Check your heater before first use each winter.
-
· Flues and chimneys on some types of heaters may require cleaning once a year.
-
· To protect children, check that their night clothes are labelled "Low Fire Danger". Natural fabrics, especially wool, have a low fire danger.
-
· Always supervise children in rooms with heaters.
-
· Keep clothing, curtains and toys at least one metre away.
-
· Before you retire for the night or leave your house, ensure fires are extinguished and heaters are turned off.
Photographing Your Valuables :
Many items, often expensive or sentimental, such as jewellery, paintings, crystal, glassware, antiques, silverware, and various other collectables are difficult to mark. Instead, these items should be photographed or video recorded. In the event that any of these items are stolen, the photos can assist the police in recovering your valuables and apprehending the criminals. Photographs or video tapes showing your valuables can also be used for proof of identification and ownership for your insurance company.
When photographing or recording your valuables, place each item next to a ruler to provide a scale for establishing the size. Write a brief description of the item, including any distinguishing marks or serial numbers on the back of the photo. Keep photos or videos in a safe place.
