Valley residents are being urged to do their bit to reduce litter and help protect the region's environment by local MPs Martin Cameron and Darren Chester. The pair teamed up for a community action day with some friends, and removed 10 bags of rubbish from the banks of the Traralgon Creek. Mr Cameron said he was looking for more sites to organise community action in the months ahead.

Clean community initiatives

Mr Cameron said, "Cleaning up rubbish around our parks and waterways is something we can all do to provide a safe and clean environment that everyone can enjoy. We all see it, some of us walk past it, but we can do something about it. I'm planning to coordinate more clean ups in the Latrobe Valley and would welcome any suggestions on public places that could benefit from a blitz by our team of volunteers."

Mr Chester said most people do the right thing but litter was a constant problem in the region. "I hate seeing rubbish in public places but rather than just whinge about it, I've been taking action, like a lot of other Gippslanders. When I go for a walk I often carry a bag and pick up some litter as I do my exercise. Every little bit helps and I want to thank everyone who is already taking action in their own area."

"Rubbish washes off our streets, into stormwater drains and impacts the environment of our creeks, rivers and lakes system. This week, Martin Cameron and I joined with a few friends and community members to have a quick clean up along the banks of the Traralgon Creek in the centre of town and it didn't take a lot of effort to have quite an impact," he said. Community members can forward their suggestions to darren.chester.mp@aph.gov.au or martin.cameron@parliament.vic.gov.au
