Best Way To Manage Pets

The final draft of Bass Coast Shire Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan is ready for public comment.

By Bass Coast - 25th May 2012 - Back to News

Acting Community and Economic Development Director, Philippa O’Halloran, said the Plan sets the strategic direction for domestic animal management within the Shire for the next four years.

"As part of the development of the draft Plan, Council undertook an extensive survey process to gather feedback about responsible pet ownership issues.

"We also put together a reference group of key industry and community stakeholders to workshop issues raised in the survey responses.

"This is the final draft of the Plan and we are inviting feedback or written submissions up to 21 June," said Mrs O’Halloran.

"We have had a lot of community interest in review of this Plan as it looks at how we manage dogs on beaches, off leash areas and dangerous and restricted dog breeds.

"The plan actually addresses several aspects of living with cats, dogs and other domesticated animals in the Shire," continued Mrs O’Halloran.

"Council recognises that living with animals has a positive impact on people’s well-being.

"We also accept that the needs of pets and pet owners have to be balanced with the various expectations people have for living harmoniously in their neighbourhood and sharing public places.

"Consideration is also given to what’s in the best interest of the animals themselves," said Mrs O’Halloran.

The plan aims to encourage people to enjoy animal companionship, within a framework of responsible ownership.

Feedback or written submissions close on Thursday, 21 June 2012. Address your submission to Jill Broomhall, Community Safety and drop it into the Civic Centre, 76 McBride Avenue, Wonthaggi, mail it to PO Box 118, Wonthaggi 3995 or email basscoast@basscoast.vic.gov.au.

A copy of the Domestic Animal Management Plan is available on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au or by contacting Jill Broomhall on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
