By Bass Coast Shire Council - 3rd September 2007 - Back to News

The Victorian Auditor General announced the audit, which will involve a review of the planning system at a State and local level.

The local audit will involve Maribyrnong, Boorondara, Casey, Bass Coast, Pyrenees and Shepparton councils.

Bass Coast’s Acting Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones said audit was a very positive step for future planning in Victoria.

"On the state level, the audit will look to see if the key elements of planning schemes are clear and help with consistent decision making," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"The audit will also look at how the performance of the system is measured and reported on."

On a local level, the audit will review a number policies and procedures, as well as looking at a random sample of planning decisions.

"The auditors will be looking to see if the work being done at a local level lines up with the Planning and Environment Act," explained Ms Duncan-Jones.

"They’ll also be looking to make sure the proper policies and procedures are in place.

Bass Coast will have 20 planning permit files and five planning scheme amendments reviewed as part of the audit.

"The auditors will look at actual planning decisions to see if they comply with the Planning and Environment Act and with our own planning schemes," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"We certainly welcome the opportunity to take part in this audit. Reviewing and continually improving the way we work is something Council is strongly committed to.

"This will also give Bass Coast a chance to have real input into the future direction of planning in Victoria, "said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"We’ll be able to help shape the way planning departments are administered and perform in the future, and that is a great opportunity.

The Bass Coast audit will last for 22 days and will take place between 3 September and 19 October 2007.
