Warragul CBD traffic congestionTraffic congestion in the Warragul CBD has been an increasing concern for residents over the recent years. By Baw Baw Shire Council - 8th June 2006 - Back to News Traffic congestion in the Warragul CBD has been an increasing concern for residents over the recent years due to increase in population, increase development on the south side of the town and the preferred route for crossing the railway track being at the roundabout of Smith and Queen Streets.
In 2003 Baw Baw Shire Council engaged a traffic-engineering consultant to investigate possible sites for a third railway crossing. Council’s preferred locations for an additional crossing have been identified as either Normanby Street or Latrobe Street, with a suggestion that a low level underpass could be constructed at Latrobe Street utilising the existing pedestrian underpass.
Due to the costs associated with any additional crossing, council has identified a number of projects that will contribute to reducing traffic congestion in the CBD.
The following projects have been initiated:
- Duplication of the Smith and Queen streets roundabout in order to increase its capacity and reduce queue lengths in both streets.
- Investigation into the feasibility of utilising the existing pedestrian underpass at Latrobe Street to construct a low-level vehicle underpass. Trucks, four-wheel drives and ‘people movers’ would be excluded from using the underpass.
- Seeking tenders from appropriately qualified consulting engineers to prepare detailed concept designs for underpasses at Latrobe Street and Normanby Street.
- The establishment of a council working group comprising representatives from the Warragul Business Group, Probus Warragul and council. The group will investigate other opportunities to reduce traffic congestion through the CBD – particularly at peak times.
- The preparation of a funding submission in relation to the construction of a third railway crossing, to be used to lobby both state and federal governments to provide funding for the construction of the crossing.
Funds of approximately $86,000 will be provided in the 2006/2007 budget to pay the consultants for the preparation of the concept design plans for the two underpass options.
