Community the winner with future plans for Traralgon Court House
The community will be the winner with plans underway for a refurbishment of the Traralgon Court House. Latrobe City Council is calling for Expressions of Interest for a commercial café in the newer section of the building and for community group.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the renovations and activation of the Court House would provide a valuable asset for the community for years to come."This project will see the two distinct parts of the Court House put to good use. The older, heritage section will be offered to community groups. We are calling for Expressions of Interest from not-for- profit groups who will use the area for some sort of social enterprise. The successful community applicants need to provide proposals in keeping with the historic nature of the Traralgon Court House and complimentary to the community’s vision of what it should be used for. They will not have permission to refurbish, alter or extend the heritage part of the building.
"Occupation of the heritage portion will not be subject to rent, but the selected applicant must contribute towards electricity, telephone, heating and water consumption at an agreed rate.
"Those interested in using the 1950s add-on section, for a small café or bistro, can apply and will be responsible for any refurbishment, alternations or extension costs," Cr O’Callaghan said.
A Q&A session will be held on Wednesday 12 April from 4.30 pm to 6pm at the Traralgon Court House to provide more information to interested community members.
"The Court House is a beloved building in the Traralgon CBD and being able to turn it over to the capable hands of the community is the best way forward. It is an iconic feature in the town and opening up a commercial outlet will ensure that visitors and residents alike can access the building and appreciate its history and heritage," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
Expressions of Interest close 27 April. Information can be downloaded from www.latrobe.vic.gov.au/tenders.
Intending applicants can also phone Michael Bloyce, Manager Arts & Events, on 1300 367 700.
