The private details of campers booking at Wilsons Promontory's Tidal River campground have had their user details compromised by the Andrews government's new website. The government website states, "Parks Victoria has temporarily paused camping and accommodation bookings for the 2023-24 season as we work with our booking system." Parks Victoria campsite booking system which crashed on its first day of operation, remains closed as a result. The booking system is unavailable for phone or online bookings.

Booking system criticised

Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Public Land Use and The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath has criticised the botched launch of the online system. "The leaking of campers' personal details and potentially financial information is totally unacceptable. The Andrews government must confirm exactly what data breaches have occurred, contact affected citizens and publicly apologise."

"It is hugely disappointing that Victorian, interstate, and international tourists are being denied the ability to book a campsite at our jewel in the south, Wilson's Prom at this time. July is traditionally the time when many locals are trying to secure a booking for their summer holiday to coordinate with their annual leave," said Ms Bath.

Promontory campground crisis

Ms Bath said it is evident that the Andrews government testing of the new system for Wilson's Promontory was seriously flawed. "For many years Prom campers were well served by the ballot system which provided fair access to campsites during the peak summer period.

"In a matter of weeks Labor's new online booking system has crashed and compromised campers personal details - the issue must be investigated, and a detailed explanation provided as a priority. The Andrews government must detail what security measures have been undertaken to protect people's personal data and provide a guarantee that it won't happen again," Ms Bath said.
