Waterwatch volunteers have received Certificates of Appreciation from Latrobe City Council for their voluntary work monitoring local rivers and creeks for water quality.
Vienne Verheesen, Latrobe Waterwatch Coordinator, said the scientific data volunteers collected was owned by the community and provided important information in assessing the health of the region’s rivers and creeks.
"Each sample of water tested and documented supplies a window into the river for future generations to tap into. Without this kind of information available, it would be almost impossible to fully understand any trends in the environmental change of our region," Ms Verheesen said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that Latrobe City recognised the importance of the volunteer’s contribution to the local environment.
"Waterwatch volunteers are doing magnificent work which is directly benefiting Latrobe’s environment. By monitoring the water quality of our streams and rivers, authorities can assess the impact of potential erosion and land management problems and take steps to address them," Cr Jenkins said.
"There are many organisations in our region which provide great benefits to our local community. Many of them would not survive without the dedication of the people who give up their time for the benefit of the rest of the community.
"Latrobe City, in recognising the International Year of Volunteers, is making Certificates of Appreciation available to all volunteers who contribute to our community. We encourage all volunteer groups throughout the municipality to contact Council to request certificates that can be distributed to their members," Cr Jenkins concluded.
Each Certificate of Appreciation is signed by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon Steve Bracks MP, and the Victorian Minister for Community Services, the Hon Christine Campbell MP. The Certificates of Appreciation will be available until Friday 31 August.
Community and volunteer organisation representatives can request Certificates of Appreciation simply by nominating the number of certificates they need for distribution to their members, and contacting Wendy Hansen at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
