By Latrobe Valley Baseball Association - 6th June 2001 - Back to News The action continued last Sunday in the Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association with round seven games. In A grade Traralgon defeated Morwell, while Churchill edged out Moe/Newborough.
Churchill hosted Moe/Newborough in a tight affair, which saw the Braves come away with a 12-11 victory. The Dodgers Noel Tobias put on a hitting display with a home run and 2 doubles and Ross Cooen hit a home run and two singles for the Braves. The pitching played a big part in the outcome of the game as Date and Wilson did a good job for the Dodgers while Stein and Bennett performed well for Churchill.
The B grade contest was not as close as the Dodgers came away convincing winners. Noel Tobias continued his good form with another home run while Fletcher and Luke were solid contributors for Moe/Newborough. C grade was won by Churchill 20 to 12 with Gill and Craddock in good form for the Braves and Smith playing well for the Dodgers. Highlight of the game was a huge home run by Craddock. The under 14 game was won by Churchill 19-2 and the under 12 contest was won by the Dodgers 18-7.
Morwell traveled to Traralgon to take on the inform Redsox. The Redsox controlled throughout the main game as they won 14-2. For the Redsox Jude Power debuted in A grade and had a single and a double. Brett Sharp continued his form with the bat with a single, a triple and a sacrificed fly. The Cougars changed their pitchers in an effort to control the Traralgon batters but inconsistent fielding allowed Traralgon to get on base and score runs.
In the B grade game Traralgon won a low scoring contest 8-3. Wayne Beams started on the mound for the Redsox and kept the Cougars scoreless through the first three innings. Beams finished with nine strikeouts and allowed only six hits for the game while having three hits himself. Scott Pollerd and Wells Humphrey were solid contributors for the Redsox.
The C grade game was a tense contest that ended in a 6-6 draw. The under 14 game was just as thrilling as both teams were deadlocked at 11-11 by the end of play. Tralagon’s Matthew McLean, who was honored with all-star selection at the under 14 carnival last weekend had three hits. In an exciting game that included a run-down play involving Dean Graham and Jarrod Wilhelme both teams couldn’t be separated all day.
The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association season has a week off this week as the seniors travel to Ballarat for the Victorian Provincial Baseball League Championships. The team, which is coached by John Kus, will compete in Division Two.
