Janine selected for Takasago teaching assignmentA primary school teacher from Moe is being fully funded by the City of Takasago in Japan By Latrobe City Council - 14th June 2001 - Back to News A primary school teacher from Moe is being fully funded by the City of Takasago in Japan, to teach English for a year in Latrobe’s Sister City’s high schools.
Janine Edbrooke, a grade 3 and 4 teacher at South Street Primary School, was appointed from a number of applicants as an Assistant English Teacher (AET) in Japan, after selection by Latrobe City Council.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the Assistant English Teacher Program was a direct result of Latrobe City entering into a Sister City relationship with Takasago City. According to Cr Jenkins, the program will provide significant opportunities for young graduates from Latrobe.
"Janine will hopefully be the first of many AET’s that Latrobe sends to Takasago City. We anticipate that in the future a number of graduates will be able to teach in Takasago under the same program," Cr Jenkins said.
The Program involves Janine spending twelve months in Takasago where she will assist with teaching English at their high schools. Takasago City is fully funding the program, including her travel, accommodation and wages.
"Council believes this is an excellent program that will benefit Latrobe City, Janine, her pupils in Japan, and in Australia upon her return; and we are most grateful to our Sister City for making such a unique opportunity and adventure available to one of Latrobe’s young citizens," Cr Jenkins said.
"This opportunity was open to all graduates from Latrobe City. We were fortunate in Janine’s instance that she was also a teacher, but that was not a prerequisite. All graduates were invited to apply, and this will continue to be the case in the future.
"We are thrilled to be giving Janine this opportunity. We believe she will make an excellent ambassador for Latrobe City as well as an excellent AET," Cr Jenkins added.
"This Program is another example of the benefits that can arise from Council establishing relationships outside of the region. Such opportunities would not normally be available to our Citizens, and we are very pleased that the continued growth in our Sister City relationship with Takasago will continue to present opportunities for our City," Cr Jenkins concluded.
Janine leaves on her great adventure on 30 July 2001.
