Derek Hibbert, Environmental/Coastal Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council, was one of five finalists in the Local Government Professionals Young Achiever of the Year Award.

Derek was nominated for the award due to his dedication to working with the local community to preserve and enhance Bass Coast’s beautiful coastal areas. Since he began working with Council in mid 2000, Derek has strengthened existing partnerships and forged new ones with environmental groups and networks across the region.

According to Paul Smith, Environment Manager at Council, Derek’s passion for his work made him an obvious candidate for the award, which is presented annually to a Victorian local government professional under thirty years of age.

"Derek’s most notable achievements have been increasing the conservation work undertaken in the Shire’s coastal areas, attracting new funding for community groups to undertake this work, promoting long-term environmental sustainability of coastal assets, and developing local and regional partnerships that have encouraged a consistent approach to environmental issues," said Paul.

"Derek’s dedication, knowledge, skills and passion have made him a fantastic ambassador for Bass Coast Shire Council and local government as a whole," said Paul.

The winner of the Young Achiever award was announced at the LGPro annual conference last Thursday and was presented to Justin O’Meara from the City of Knox.
