Update On Bogong (South) Complex Fire

The expected cool and calm conditions did not eventuate today for firefighters tackling parts of the Gippsland fires, with new outbreaks at several locations

By DSE/CFA - 10th February 2003 - Back to News

The expected cool and calm conditions did not eventuate today for firefighters tackling parts of the Gippsland fires, with new outbreaks at several locations.

The predicted southerly winds were a long time coming and in the meantime strong swirling northerly winds made fire behaviour unpredictable.

Swifts Creek has fire on several sides, but the town itself is not believed to be in any immediate danger since the change arrived, while Ensay is in a similar position.

Outbreaks occurred today at Brookville North and to the north of Cassilis.

Tongio, Ensay North and Bindi were also on alert for ember showers throughout the afternoon.

The threat in Swifts Creek, Ensay, Brookville, Cassilis, Tongio, Ensay North and Bindi eased when a southerly change arrived, but residents need to remain alert.

Further west, fire crews have pulled back from the Sarah Range as they assess the fire situation at the nearby Ti-tree Spur.

The fire burning at Mt Ewen remains within control lines, and in the Dargo High Plains the Treasures Homestead has been saved thanks to the efforts of DSE crews and three tankers.

In the east, there is fire east of Gelantipy, near McKillop’s Bridge and Deddick, while residents of both Bonang and Deddick should be alert for possible ember attack over the coming hours.
