Municipal rates are due next monthPay up to avoid interest penalties By East Gippsland Shire - 6th January 2003 - Back to News East Gippsland Shire Rates and Property Coordinator, Doug Paterson, is reminding residents that the final date for payment of municipal rates is Monday, 17 February 2003.
"Residents who have chosen to pay their rates in one payment must do so by this date, if they are to avoid interest penalties," Doug said.
"Alternatively, about 32% of residents are using the quarterly instalment system and they need to make their next payment by 28 February 2003.
"The last couple of weeks leading up to the due date is always the busiest time and we expect quite a rush of payments in the coming weeks.
"If payment is not made by the close of business on 17 February, residents will be liable for interest dating back to 17 July 2002 and that will be charged at 12.25%.
"We are encouraging anyone having difficulties in paying their rates to contact the office and make some arrangements. Obviously, any amount paid before the due date will help to reduce the interest liability," Doug said.
Residents who have not received a rate notice or misplaced the original should contact the Shire immediately.
"We are encouraging people to act now and not leave it to the last minute to finalise payment," Doug said.
"We have staff available to answer rate queries and provide advice for residents."
Payment methods are detailed on the reverse side of rate notices and include a variety of options such as mailing cheques, BPAY, telephone credit card, Australia Post and personal attendance at Shire Business Centres in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Omeo and Paynesville.
"Residents should note that postal or bank transfer delays are not accepted as excuses for late payments and they should act soon to avoid any interest penalties," Doug said.
Information on rate notices is available by contacting the Shire Rates Unit directly on 5153 9588.
