Grand Prix Activities In CowesSKYY Vodka Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix set to race! By Carol McCormack - 15th October 2002 - Back to News •Tell us your opinion •See what others have said Bass Coast Shire Council has worked with the community and Grand Prix officials to put together activities and facilities in Cowes and throughout Phillip Island for the 2002 SKYY Vodka Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, 18-20 October 2002.
"Of course, most of the action will happen at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "However, Council is keen to ensure race-goers are able to relax and enjoy themselves when they’re away from the track, too."
Cr Gains said that socialising with other Grand Prix fans is all part of the experience. A licensed area will be established in the jetty triangle in Cowes and will operate on Friday and Saturday evenings, allowing race-goers to chat about the day’s events over a drink. The area will be managed in accordance with the conditions of the Liquor Licensing Act. Bands will perform from a stage set up near the band rotunda to provide entertainment to the public in the licenced area.
A superscreen placed at the bottom end of Thompson Avenue will screen race highlights and band action from the jetty triangle on Friday and Saturday nights. The very popular rider interviews will again take place on Saturday evening on a temporary stage set up next to the superscreen.
The Island Night Express shuttle bus service will provide transport for race-goers to Cowes from the circuit and around Phillip Island and San Remo during the event. This night time operation will supplement the Grand Prix shuttle bus, which provides an extensive service to the circuit.
"Council wants to make sure everyone can enjoy themselves, both race-goers and the local community," said Cr Gains. "Therefore, our Local Laws officers will be patrolling over the weekend to ensure that visitors understand and comply with Local Laws such as bans on sleeping in vehicles and drinking in public places that aren’t licensed."
