Hair Design students presented with certificates won at the Worldskills Australia Competition

GippsTAFE Hair Design students were recently presented with medals and certificates won at the Worldskills Australia Competition.

Jeff Gunningham, GippsTAFE CEO, presented the students and their employers with their certificates and medals at a special function at GippsTAFE’s Waratah Restaurant in Morwell.

"It is great to see young people competing in competitions like this so that the public can see all the wonderful things they are doing," said Mr Gunningham.

The regional heat of the Worldskills Australia Competition was held at GippsTAFE. All students that competed in the competition were enrolled in Certificate II Hairdressing.

The competition started at 7.30am and concluded at 5.30pm, including categories such as style cutting, colour, blow waving and long hair design, judged by a panel of 4 people.

The Worldskills Gold Medal was won by Marieetta Brand from Tony and Guys Hair Salon in South Yarra.

The silver medal was presented to Krisy Schiele from Ross International in Traralgon and Bairnsdale, and the bronze medal went to Bianca Appleton from Hair Pzazz in Traralgon.

Other competitors included Kelly Gill from Boulevard Salon in Morwell and Rodney Kyle from Colli’s Hair Design in Traralgon and Moe, who were presented with participation certificates.

"The Gold Medallist will compete at the National Finals which will be held in Newcastle, NSW," said Shirley Nicholson, Coordinator of GippsTAFE’s Hair Design and Beauty Department.

"An international team will be chosen after the nationals to compete in St Gallen in Switzerland in 2003."

GippsTAFE’s Certificate III in Hairdressing- Apprenticeship trains students over 4 years in the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to complement on the job salon training.

Topics covered in the course include communicating in the workplace, receiving and directing clients, preparing clients for salon services, coordinating salon tasks and selling products and services
