The Wonthaggi Wetlands will be visually transformed when the Wonthaggi "Big Plant" takes place on Sunday 4 August 2002. This will be the third year of the Big Plant event and the first time at the Wetlands.

35 local community groups will plant 10,000 indigenous plants from 10am at the Wetlands, which are located off South Dudley Road.

On Thursday 1 and Friday 2 August, local school students will be involved in an educational program at Baxters Wetland in Wonthaggi. The students will undertake environmental education, artwork and tree planting.

"Last year more than 600 primary school children attended the Baxters Wetland activities, enjoying the diversity of activities organised," said Geoff Trease, Landcare Officer with the Powlett Project. "They all had a fantastic time and learnt so much."

The work that the students undertake at Baxters Wetland will complement work completed at last year’s Big Plant.

It’s not just the Big Plant on 4 August that will transform the Wonthaggi Wetlands. Work on other aspects of this central recreation area has begun in earnest. A $25,000 grant from VicHealth and a further $10,000 injection from the Bass Coast Shire Council has stimulated much action. The walking track has been upgraded, enabling easier access all year round throughout the park. Seating is soon to be erected at strategic points along the tracks. Directional signage will be built also.

Beth Banks from the Cape Paterson Coastal Plains Landcare Group said that members and friends of the Fellowship of Mental Health in Wonthaggi have undertaken considerable works on the surrounding environment including tree planting and weed control works.

"Their efforts have been very valuable," said Beth.

"Not only will the planting of 10,000 plants in the open areas of the Wetlands park make a significant visual impact on the site, it will also improve the environmental value of the area," said Geoff. "Through the planting we aim to enhance the habitat for native wildlife and provide an environment that will encourage more users into the park."

Everyone is most welcome to come along and be a part of this great day. The Rotary Club of Wonthaggi will be providing lunch for all those helping plant. Parking is strictly to be along South Dudley Road on the Wetlands side. Please enter South Dudley Road from the Bass Highway, passing the golf course.
