Morwell CBD Revitalisation Begins This WeekendMotorists advised to use alternative routes where possible while works are underway By Latrobe City Council - 4th June 2002 - Back to News The first stage of the Morwell CBD Revitalisation works will commence this weekend with motorists advised to use alternative routes where possible while works are underway during the next couple of months.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the initial stage of works would provide better access to the Church Street shopping precinct and more convenient parking in Princes Drive.
"This upgrade to the amenity of Princes Drive and Church Street is the first stage of a number of projects funded by Latrobe City and the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce designed to revitalise Morwell’s Central Business District," Cr Jenkins said.
"This first stage involves the creation of angle parking on the north side of Princes Drive from Collins Street to a point 100 metres east of Church Street.
It also involves the reversing of the one-way traffic in Church Street between Princes Drive and Buckley Street."
Councillor Darrell White said the works entailed the creation of angle parking bays on the north side of Princes Drive from Collins Street to east of Church Street. "This will provide easy access parking, and the works will also allow for on-road bicycle lanes, which will be warmly welcomed by cyclists," Cr White said.
"Princes Drive will be reduced to single lane vehicle traffic both ways which will have a traffic calming effect and provide the environs with an atmosphere more like a shopping and business precinct.
"Following the completion of the works, traffic will enter Church Street from Princes Drive, which motorists will find more convenient. It will encourage people to slip into Church Street to do some shopping," Cr White added.
Princes Drive will remain open to traffic at all times, however, some delays are expected and through traffic is advised to use alternative routes where possible.
