Coal Mine Museum RestorationGippsTAFE has been acknowledged for its contribution to the "Old Brown Coal Mine Museum" By Eimear McNelis - 23rd April 2002 - Back to News GippsTAFE has been acknowledged for its contribution to the renovation of the "Old Brown Coal Mine Museum", where 250 people attended the official opening by the member for Narracan Ian Maxfield MP.
After an extensive renovation, the former Yallourn Nth Camp Recreation Building, Yallourn Nth YMCA Community Centre and Yallourn Nth Youth Club, will now be home for the Yallourn North and District Historical Society and a museum known as the "Old Brown Coal Mine Museum".
GippsTAFE’s Building, Construction and Safety, Plumbing and Gasfitting, and Painting and Decorating departments were involved in the 16-month renovation to bring the building up to regulation.
GippsTAFE’s Construction and Safety Department lifted and transported a small turbine known as the "C3 Turbine Generator" to the museum that was originally removed from the Yallourn Power Station. A building was constructed over the turbine by GippsTAFE’s Building Department along with Morwell Community Correctional Facilities.
A small gaol that was once located at the police station in Reserve Street was also relocated to the museum by GippsTAFE’s Construction and Safety Department along with Linfox Trucking.
A publication that will be available inside the museum titled "The Story Behind the Old Brown Coal Mine Museum" was also launched on the day, which is about the restoration and history of the building.
The publication thanked all persons involved in the restoration including GippsTAFE staff Mark Nestor and Kevin Newey for the rigging done during restoration, Angelo Bau and Robert Parsons for boiler making, Trevor Renshaw who supervised the site, and Glen Charles, Gary Dunbier, and Katherine Ryan for temporary signage.
