Get a Job with GippsTAFE

Do you want a job in health and community services, building, construction or retail?

By Bruce Wardley - 9th April 2002 - Back to News

A national survey of TAFE graduates has found that the best TAFE courses for getting a job in Gippsland are in Health and Community Services, Building, and Construction and Retail.

The survey conducted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), found many GippsTAFE graduates were now working in hospitals, nursing homes, childcare centres, aged accommodation, the building industry, supermarkets, clothing stores, cake shops, florists and car dealerships.

The most popular occupations were business administration, customer service, word processing, banking, human resources, sales, toolmaking, electrical, bricklaying, plumbing and gasfitting, plastering, printing, panel beating, bakeries, cooking, gardening, hairdressing, engineering, teaching, social work, accounting, photography and libraries.

An extremely large number of graduates were employed in the electricity, gas and water supply industries, reflecting the Institute’s specialisation in the utilities market through the Latrobe Valley power industry, and ETTA Training in Melbourne.

Retail was the next biggest category, again reflecting GippsTAFE’s major contact with Big W in Victoria for retail traineeships.

GippsTAFE scored very highly when it came to preparing students for jobs or further study.

The 2001 survey found 85% of GippsTAFE students were either employed or undertaking further study after finishing their course, and nearly 80% achieved what they wanted out of their course.

The survey also found 17% of GippsTAFE graduates went on to University studies, and 9% already had a University degree before starting at GippsTAFE.

The survey also found that the starting salary for GippsTAFEgraduates was more than $30,000 a year, well ahead of some University courses.

GippsTAFE scored consistently high results in the instructors’ knowledge of subject content, instructors’ ability, the balance between instruction and practice, assessment methods and the presentation of training material.

GippsTAFE’s best results came when students were asked if their field study was similar to the course they were studying and their current job, and how they rated the quality of training.

GippsTAFE scored 8 out of 10 for the quality of training, well ahead of most other TAFE Institutes including all TAFE Institutes based in Melbourne.

The average age for GippsTAFE graduates is 32, although the biggest peak in student numbers is between 18 and 21, with another peak in the 39 to 42 year old group.
