Associate Professor Xie Yu Mei from Southern Yangtze University, China is visiting Monash University Gippsland Campus until the end of May to gain an understanding of Australian university teaching methods and Monash academic material to assist in teaching Economics to students involved with the two plus two program between the Faculty of Business and Economics - Gippsland and Southern Yangtze University. Southern Yangtze students will be studying in China for the first two years and then transfer to Gippsland for the final two years of their degree. The first group of students is expected to commence at Gippsland in July 2006.

Dr Ron Gallagher, Research & Development Director, Lonely Planet Publications will be presenting the Humanities, Communications & Social Sciences research seminars on Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19. On Monday, Dr Gallagher presents ‘University-Industry Research Partnerships and Grants’ and gives an overview of the grant getting and industry collaboration process from a Lonely Planet perspective. On Tuesday, Dr Gallagher will present ‘Interpreting Pictures’ and how his work explores the philosophical implications of work in vision research and the growing body of evidence that interpreting pictures has more in common with natural visual recognition than it has with a language.

Making the Grade

The School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences (HUMCASS) 2005 Annual Awards will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at the Gippsland Campus. The evening will celebrate the outstanding achievement of HUMCASS students studying a range of degrees both on and off campus. Awards to be presented include the Pro Vice Chancellor’s Community Service Award, Head of School’s Award and the Mollie Holman Medal for an outstanding PhD thesis.

Dr Nick Deacon has been appointed to the role of Director (Research) for the Gippsland Campus and the Gippsland Regional Health Research Initiative for the remainder of 2005. Dr Deacon has a high profile background in biomedical science research at the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health in Melbourne and has recently been working at the Gippsland Campus on a research mapping exercise.

The International Student’s Associations from all Monash campuses held their inaugural conference at the Gippsland Campus last week. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins, attended the conference and students took the opportunity to discuss and compare their life at Monash University.
