Prospective students are invited to ‘Explore Monash’ at Gippsland Campus on April 6. The free program kicks off at 10 a.m. with a presentation about study habits and preparing for the VCE year by acclaimed motivational speaker Steven McInnes. After lunch the prospective students will then have the opportunity to hear about the faculties they are most interested in, meet with current students and tour residences. Registration is essential. To register call 5122 6594.

• Making the Grade

Four top students in Art and Design received Patrons Prizes on March 17. The $200 awards were presented to David Wakefield, Roslyn Robinson, Suzanne Miller and Cameron Miller by Ms Julie Adams, Head of Gippsland Centre for Art and Design. "One of the joys of teaching is to see the development and progress of students on their journey," said Ms. Adams. "This presentation of prizes celebrates the passion, ambition, excellence and motivation demonstrated by these students."

More than 350 students and their families attended the first Monash University Gippsland Campus Graduation for 2004 on March 20. All Faculties were represented at the graduation with Mr Felix Pintado, CEO of the Latrobe Regional Hospital giving the Occasional Address at the morning ceremony and Mr Ken Tabart, Manager, Morwell GHD Pty Ltd at the afternoon ceremony.

A Gippsland Engineering student is on the road to success after completing a prestigious one-year term with Ford Motor Company. Francis Triantafyllou was one of the Australian students selected from about 4000 applicants to spend a year engineering at Ford. As a result of that experience he's not only got experience in a prestigious engineering firm, he's also on the fast track to work full-time for Ford. When he finishes his engineering degree here at Gippsland at the end of this year, he's already guaranteed an interview with Ford for their graduate program.

Federal government proposals for national education standards may have benefits, but those involving standard ages should be carefully considered according to Dr. Monique Osborn from the Faculty of Education. She argues that children tend to progress at different levels and a standardized age requirement could have negative repercussions for some students.
