By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 15th April 2004 - Back to News Fuel reduction burns being conducted by the Department over the Easter long weekend have produced a large amount of smoke across many parts of the region. Other burns ignited yesterday have been closely monitored, but burns near Neerim South, Tanjil South and Bairnsdale have flared up in the windy conditions and escaped their control lines.
A fire at the south east end of the Blue Rock dam in the Tanjil South area has burned through 250 hectares of state forest and 15 hectares of private land. Assets currently under threat include farm buildings and fences. Residents in this area have been warned to expect embers to reach their properties and to enact their bushfire plans.
Another fire in the Flaggy Creek area near Bairnsdale has breached control lines and is burning in private forest, currently at 25 hectares, with spotting ahead of the firefront. This fire is posing a threat to private assets in the Flaggy Creek, Watts Creek/Boundary Track and Parkers Lane areas and residents in these areas have been advised to expect heavy smoke and possibly embers and to enact their bushfire plans.
The police will be closing Parkers Lane and the public are advised not to enter the area for their own safety.
A fire at Patrol Road, seven kilometres east of Neerim South has reached 150 hectares and is currently burning through private property. Spotfires have been detected on private land north of Ingleman's Road and are being suppressed. Shedding in the area is being protected by ground and air attack, but other buildings to the east of the fire could come under threat if the wind changes. Joint DSE-CFA Incident Management teams have been established at Bairnsdale, Noojee and erica to manage these fires.
