Liberals To Introduce A Fox Bounty

A Liberal Government will act to control foxes which are killing thousands of newborn lambs and predating on native wildlife, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said foxes were in plague proportions and causing immeasurable damage throughout country Victoria, but the Bracks Government had done nothing to assist farmers and landowners.

"Tens of thousands of new-born lambs are being slaughtered this winter, as they were last year, causing millions of dollars worth of losses to farmers across the state," Mr Davis said.

"Farming in Victoria is pretty tough when your own State Government provides no support and turns a blind eye to the extent of the problem.

"Foxes are also responsible for the slaughter of an unknown number of small native animals."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would address the fox problem immediately.

"A Liberal Government will introduce a fox bounty program to control of fox populations," he said.

"The program will be introduced in consultation with primary producers and shooting groups, with a $10 bounty for each fox tail collected."

Mr Davis said unlike the Bracks Labor Government, a Liberal Government was committed to ongoing programs to control feral animals.

"In 2002 the Bracks Government conducted a fox bounty trial, during which 150,000 fox tails were handed in to the Department of Sustainability and Environment," he said.

"Despite this success, Labor showed no interest in assisting farmers any further, and axed the fox bounty scheme.

"The Liberal Party recognises that effective pest control measures must be continued over a longer period of time to result in long-term results.

"Rather than give up after 12 months, a Liberal Government would commit to a long term fox bounty scheme."
