Youth Say It Pays To Have a Say

As every parent knows – teenagers need their own space!Based on feedback from consultation with young people, Bass Coast Shire Council is now looking at the feasibility of having a designated space for our young people.

By Bass Coast - 8th September 2011 - Back to News

Council’s Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said that information collected from consultation with young people, youth service providers and other groups earlier this year identified the need for a youth space. "We’d like to find out what kind of facility or facilities are needed in Bass Coast to reflect the diversity of needs in our community," said Ms Mitchell.

"A range of activities, programs and services are already available for young people in Bass Coast. We are interested to know who uses these, what works well, and what else is needed.

"A new on-line survey will be launched on 12 September on our website, so that people can give us their views. As an added incentive, there are four $100 vouchers from local surf shops up for grabs."

The survey is available on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au or on the Youth in Bass Shire (YiBS) website www.yibs.net.au.
Council will also be holding workshops to look into the feasibility of creating a Youth Space.

Information on the survey and workshops will be available at schools, libraries, through youth networks and on Council’s website.

It pays to say

Five young people who filled in the initial youth survey earlier in the year, received prizes of an iPod Touch or iTunes voucher for their contribution. Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman, congratulated the winners for taking the time to complete the survey which informed development of the recently adopted Bass Coast Youth Plan 2011–2015.

"Council is always interested in what young people have to say and your contribution, and that of other young people across the Shire, provided valuable information for the Youth Plan," said Cr Dowman.
