Recruited chef will add authentic flavour to new restaurant

By working closely with the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs to secure the services of a top class, head chef, Morwell’s Rasa Thai restaurant, will be able to offer authentic Thai and Malaysian cuisine.

Mr Ng Ah Lim arrived in Morwell recently to begin employment as head chef at Richard Hooi’s new Morwell restaurant. Mr Lim has 23 years’ experience as a chef working throughout Malaysia, particularly in Kuala Lumpur.

Latrobe City’s senior economic development officer, Leo Billington, said that the problem faced by the Rasa Thai and many other specialised businesses, was finding a person with the necessary skills and expertise.

"It’s one of those situations where there is a clearly identifiable shortage of people with the key qualifications, skills and experience currently within Australia.

"While in Malaysia late last year, Richard met Mr Lim in Kuala Lumpur and Mr Lim certainly had the right credentials as a first class head chef for Richard’s new restaurant," Mr Billington explained.

After talking to Latrobe City about his needs, Mr Hooi was introduced to the Regional Migration strategy being delivered by the Regional Migration Incentive Fund (RMIF), an initiative of the state government.

"The RMIF aims to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of communities in regional Victoria through the attraction and retention of skilled migrants. There is a close working relationship between the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs and the RMIF program and consequently, Richard Hooi was able to obtain assistance and guidance," Mr Billington said.

"Victoria is being promoted internationally as a destination of choice for skilled migrants. The LiveInVictoria website advertises job vacancies for potential migrants and newly arrived migrants to view and apply directly to prospective employers who otherwise may be encountering skill shortages when trying to fill vacancies.

"By working with the Department and Latrobe City, Richard Hooi was able to satisfactorily complete all the necessary formalities in an efficient manner that resulted in a quick turnaround in paperwork," Mr Billington said.

Mr Hooi said that the arrival of Mr Lim was a moment of great joy, as now the restaurant can boast having a traditional chef to prepare a specialised cuisine.

"Mr Lim trained in Kuala Lumpur and specialises in Thai cooking. His cooking is influenced by traditional Indian and Malay recipes and flavours. The main ingredients include chilli, lime, lemon grass and palm sugar. I specialise in Malaysian cooking, so together we make a great team," Mr Hooi said.

"It was important to me to have an experienced chef from my native home, Malaysia. I am appreciative of the efficiency of the RMIF and the Department of Immigration to help me achieve my goal," Mr Hooi said.

Mr Billington added that Mr Lim was excited about his new restaurant.

"Actually, his wife is also a chef back home and her specialty is traditional Thai desserts. All round, the Rasa Thai’s chefs make a great team," Mr Billington concluded.
