Over 200,000 Visitors For The Year!

Bass Coast Shire's Visitor Information Centres have had their busiest ever year, with the 200,000th visitor calling in at Newhaven Visitor Centre on Friday 15 June.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 22nd June 2007 - Back to News

This is the first time the combined visitor numbers of the four Centres has reached 200,000 in a single year, surpassing the previous best of 195,001 in 2004/05.

The landmark 200,000 total came up when the Shaw family from New Zealand came through the door at the Newhaven centre. The lucky family received a complimentary three Parks Pass donated by Phillip Island Nature Parks, as well as meal vouchers for the Wonthaggi Workman's Club and the Inlet Hotel in Inverloch.

"We were really keen to ensure that no matter which of the four Visitor Information Centres the 200,000th visitor came into, there was an incentive for them to visit all parts of the Shire," said Peter Francis, Council’s Visitor Services Manager.

"Local businesses right across the Shire generously provided their support," he added.

Mr Francis said a number of factors contributed to the influx of visitors to Bass Coast this year.

"The unseasonally warm and stable weather right through until May brought many people," explained Mr Francis.

"The impact of the drought on some on the popular inland waterway holiday destinations and the fires in Gippsland all played their part in bringing more people to our Shire.

"Apart from that, Bass Coast boasts some terrific new attractions to add to the established ones," continued Mr Francis

"This is in addition to the spectacular rural and coastal scenery and great accommodation on offer."
