Monash Backs Nelson’s Uni Specialisation

Decision to diminish opportunities for Gippslanders

By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News

Students at Monash University could be forgiven for thinking that specialisation has been introduced. Monash has already closed Arts at the Peninsula campus and will gradually wind up psychology at the Gippsland campus this year. And it seems that the school of engineering at the Gippsland campus is next to get the chop.

"The decision by the Faculty of Engineering to close engineering at Gippsland shows that Monash is streamlining regional campuses to deliver specific study programs. And engineering won’t be one of those specific study program," according to Andrew Schmidt president of the Monash University Gippsland Student Union.

"Despite Nelson’s recent rhetoric about supporting regional campuses and universities there hasn’t been any proof of such support. And yet the government is allowing Monash University to specialise an important regional campus of Victoria and Monash," said Mr. Schmidt.

"The decision is obviously diminishing the opportunities for Gippslanders and Monash is prematurely specialising its regional campuses. University specialisation will continue to erode opportunities for Gippslanders unless it is stopped," Mr. Schmidt said.

"The Gippsland campus was predominantly founded on engineering. It has a direct link to the community historically. This region is heavily industry based and it requires direct access to quality graduates. Instead Nelson’s specialisation and Monash support for such a proposal will continue to erode our opportunities," said Mr. Schmidt.
