Strategy To Tackle Youth Unemployment Under A Re-Elected Coalition

Young Unemployed People Will Find It Easier To Gain Work Under A Re-Elected Victorian Coalition Government Thanks To The Youth Employment Strategy Announced On Sunday, Nationals Candidate For Morwell Russell Northe Said.

By Russell North - 19th November 2014 - Back to News

Mr Northe said a re-elected Coalition Government would introduce a range of measures to ensure young unemployed people could find meaningful work, and stay in it.

"Youth unemployment is an issue in regional Victoria, but there’s no silver bullet to solve it," Mr Northe said.

"The Liberal-Nationals Coalition understands that a range of initiatives are needed if we are to tackle youth unemployment and get more young people into work.

"If re-elected, the Coalition will introduce the Youth Unemployment Strategy to support Victorians between 15-24 years old who aren’t enrolled in education or training to find employment."

Mr Northe said a major focus of the strategy would be to ensure young people, often with little or no work experience, were more attractive potential employees for businesses.

"One of the reasons that employers, particularly small businesses, are reluctant to hire young or inexperienced candidates is because it can be an expensive risk – so the Coalition Government wants to change that," Mr Northe said.

"The two-year Youth Unemployment Strategy would include vouchers of up to $2,000 to assist small businesses with recruitment and start-up costs, WorkCover premium rebates for businesses that employ an eligible young person for 12 months, and payroll tax exclusion for eligible new employees for up to 12 months.

"This would build on the Coalition Government’s track record of assisting young people to find work, including the $1.2 billion a year that has been provided in skills training subsidies compared to just $800 million under Labor.

"The Nationals understand how vital it is that we tackle youth unemployment in regional Victoria and I am proud a re-elected Coalition Government will deliver this important strategy."
