Liberals To Cut Red Tape For Hunting And Fishing

A Liberal Government will eliminate the need for multiple shooting, fishing and hunting licences, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 9th August 2006 - Back to News

Currently, hunters juggle about 10 types of firearms licences, and depending on what they choose to hunt, up to eight types of game licenses.

If these hunters also enjoy recreational fishing, they must also hold a licence for that activity.

"There are mountains of paperwork involved in the issuing and keeping of these licences, all for activities which are supposed to be recreational," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will simplify this process, cut the red tape and allow hunters and fishermen to spend more time in their chosen activity instead of filling out forms.

"We will introduce a new ‘Sporting Licence’, which will be a single, easy to use plastic card containing all the details required for firearms, fishing and hunting licencing endorsements.

"The Sporting Licence will spell the end of carrying multiple licences when hunting and fishing.

"This will be welcome relief for hunters, who took up more than 32,000 game licences last year."

Mr Davis said the new Sporting Licence would have no impact on current fishing licence arrangements, where the licence revenue raised is dedicated to recreational fishing.

"Just as is our policy on hypothecating all revenue, including fees and charges payable for hunting licences to game management, a Liberal Government will continue to hypothecate all recreational fishing licence revenue to benefit recreational fishing.

"Revenue generated from each relevant activity will be allocated accordingly."

Mr Davis said the Liberal Party believed hunting and fishing were legitimate recreational activities and more needed to be done to remove the red tape and regulation.
