Shade sails to be restored at The StrandMore comfortable playgrounds with shade sails at The Strand. By Portal Admin - 30th December 2017 - Back to News Latrobe City Council will reinstate shade sails at a park in Traralgon, reversing a decision to do away with the cloth installations at its community playgrounds.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the decision was about listening to the community.
"It was clear that the families who used this particular park wanted to keep the shade sails over the play area. They made their voices heard, via social media and contact with Council, and we listened. The old poles have been removed and the new poles and sails will be installed in the New Year.
"The decision to remove the shade sails was made in line with our playground strategy where we looked to provide trees and other structures for shade. The cloth sails can be difficult to maintain and replace, but clearly the community using this park saw the value in keeping the sails as an instant and effective measure to keep the sun off their children and the equipment," Cr White said.
"We want the community to be comfortable using our playgrounds and other outdoor spaces so we need to understand what will make them visit and spend time in these places.
"The amendment to the strategy will see that tree shade is adequate at other locations with shade sails before they are removed," Cr White concluded.
