Up to the 30 June 2006 all people between the ages of one and 22 years who have not received a dose of meningococcal C vaccine are eligible to receive a single dose of the vaccine for free, said Baw Baw Shire Council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson. "Meningococcal C can be life threatening. Vaccination is an effective way of safeguarding young people against the risks. "Our immunisation staff hold public immunisation sessions across the shire or those eligible can visit their own doctor, but must do so before 30 June 2006 to receive the free vaccination," said Mr Patterson. The national meningococcal C vaccination program commenced in January 2003 and targeted children between the ages of one and five years and 15 to 19 years from 1 January 2003 and children aged six to 14 years old from June 2003. The Australian Government has funded the program and an ongoing catch up program for children and adolescence in the eligible age range has run for the last three years. While vaccination against the meningococcal C strain is available, parents still need to be aware of the early signs of meningococcal infection as the vaccine does not protect against type B, which is more common (but less deadly) in Australia For those wishing to receive this vaccination before the end of June simply come along to council’s public immunisation session at the Drouin Uniting Church, Sinclair Street, Drouin on 28 June from 5:30pm to 6:30pm or visit your GP before the 30 June 2006.
