The exhibition recognises the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.

Since 1972, Australia has been celebrating NAIDOC week, previously known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Festivities are typically based on a national theme and this year’s theme is '50 years: Looking Forward, Looking Blak'.

Gallery director, Jacqui Hemsley said that the exhibition will include a diverse range of traditional and contemporary artworks, including a number of indigenous artifacts.

"The exhibition will feature a variety of work from students at the GippsTAFE Koori Arts Unit based in Morwell, as well as other indigenous artists in the community. It will provide residents with a fantastic opportunity to view the work of, and support some of our talented local artists.

"Some of the artists featured in the ‘Dala Koote’ exhibition are Rupert Harrison, Alice Hughes, Ronald Edwards, Lynette Dent and Gerald Fysh, and is curated by Cliff Wandin." Ms Hemsley concluded.

‘Dala Koote’ will run until Saturday 11 August 2007.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days a week, Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am – 4pm. Admission is free.
