Duck Hunters Must Be PreparedThe Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is urging duck hunters to make sure they are completely prepared for the 2005 season. By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 10th February 2005 - Back to News Hunters should check that their game licences are current and ensure their bird identification skills are up to scratch. Please note that Blue-winged Shoveler will be protected in 2005 and must not be hunted.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment will run Waterfowl Identification Tests (WIT) at the following offices in Gippsland:

Prior to sitting the WIT you should be confident in bird identification. To obtain a brochure on Australian Waterfowl visit the DSE Web site at: www.dse.vic.gov.au
Go to – ‘Recreation & Tourism’, then ‘Hunting’.
Obtain the video 'Ducks in Sight' from your local video store or from the DSE office in Orbost, Bairnsdale or Traralgon. Study until you can easily recognise the waterfowl in flight and indicate if the bird is ‘game’ or ‘non-game’.
The daily bag limit for the 2005 season will be five birds per day. An additional five Wood Duck per day may also be taken on each day of the opening weekend.
Open Day start times will be 7:10am for the eastern zone (east from Traralgon), 7:20am for the central zone (west from Traralgon to Halls Gap) and 7:30am for the western zone (west from Halls Gap).
For the remainder of the season, duck hunting is permitted from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
Lead shot must not be used for duck hunting anywhere in Victoria, although there are some exceptions. Contact DSE Wildlife Officers for more information.
Please prepare for the season now as spaces for testing are limited.
