Work to commence on better pool for MIRCMoe and Newborough to benefit from over $200,000 of pool improvements at the Moe Indoor Recreation Centre. By Latrobe City Council - 6th December 2000 - Back to News Latrobe’s Moe and Newborough communities are to benefit from over $200,000 of pool improvements at the Moe Indoor Recreation Centre (MIRC), with works to commence in under two weeks. The main element of the works will be the construction of a new state of the art wet deck.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said these were the first major improvements carried out on the pool since it was built.
“When the works are completed, visitors to the Centre will effectively have a brand new pool,” Cr Hanning said.
The project, also includes the construction of new disabled and family change room facilities, a new storeroom for the Moe Swimming Club, and renovations to existing change rooms. The project is being jointly funded by the Latrobe City Council, the Department of Sport and Recreation Victoria, and the Community Support Fund under the Better Pools Program.
“Local pool construction company Com-Tech Pool Services was last week awarded the contract for the project and will start work in less than two weeks. Com-Tech is yet another example of a local company with the necessary expertise and skills. They are one of the leaders in their industry throughout Australia,” Cr Hanning said.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said the works had been planned so that they would be completed over the summer months whilst alternative outdoor facilities could be patronised by citizens.
“The total project will take 10-12 weeks so we have planned it so that minimum inconvenience will be encountered by the community. We fully expect to re-open the pool and re-launch the Centre at the start of March 2001,” Cr Jenkins said.
Cr Tony Zimora said that the new decking for the pool would be a flat surface that would provide better access for all users.
“The sides of the pool will be fully retiled and the existing water recirculation system, which is in a state of disrepair, will be fully replaced. It really will be a better pool,” Cr Zimora said.
“All other programs offered by the Centre will continue to operate throughout the construction period. We have advised all of MIRC’s members and users of the timeframe for the works, and we will continue to keep them informed as works progress.
“We greatly appreciate the patronage given to the Centre by the Moe and Newborough communities and look forward to providing them with the very best facilities,” Cr Zimora concluded.
