Objections to property revaluations less than anticipated

569 objections received to property valuations for 2000/2001 Council rates.

Latrobe City has received 569 objections to property valuations used when ascertaining individual 2000/2001 Council rates.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said that considering the fact that this had been the first revaluation since 1993, the figure of 569 objections which translates as just 1.78% of the total rateable properties in the municipality, was very low.

“It is actually well below the estimates of Council officers who anticipated 3% of objections. The 1.78% is lower than most Councils have received, which probably means we did a good job in explaining why properties were likely to be revalued at a greater or lesser amount,” Cr Hanning said.

“Additionally, Latrobe ratepayers have benefited from one of the lowest rate increases in the State and Council has worked hard to soften any impact of revaluation,” Cr Hanning added.

Latrobe City CEO, Penny Holloway, explained that changes to revaluations from now on would be minimised, because every property in Victoria would be revalued every two years.

The valuer proposes to commence interviews with those who have lodged objection forms on 5 December 2000. These will begin in the Moe area, and it is anticipated all objections will be heard by the end of January 2001.
