After many years of extensive research, "Walhalla: Valley of Gold" gives us a unique look into Walhalla’s past through the eyes of local historian John Aldersea and his partner Barbara. John is a man with first hand knowledge of the remote goldmining town nestled deep in the valley along Stringers Creek, Gippsland, Victoria.

John and Barbara add a personal touch to the tale of this historic gold town with stories relating to people and personalities who helped to develop and support the town from its raw beginning. There are also extracts from the treasured memories of proud descendants.

Many of Walhalla’s records were either destroyed over the years by flood or fire, or stored in private collections which made the task of putting the book together an arduous labour of love. Thankfully, John and Barbara have been able to access many documents that were scattered far and wide and together have written and compiled this book for all to enjoy.

One such document is an extremely rare employment book from the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company which contains names of all the workers from 1871 through to 1912. John believes it is the only record of these workers remaining in existence and will assist people who believe their forebears may have worked in the mine.

"Walhalla: Valley of Gold" is available at the book launch for the special price of $55.00 (rrp $65.00)

This is a modern book of approximately 300 pages which features many photographs, included among them are 94 colour photographs. It also includes maps and illustrations relating to the town.

Pre sold books will be numbered and signed by the authors. If requesting a book through the mail, please enclose an additional $10 for postage and handling.

For further distribution points or for more information, please contact Barbara at Walhalla Publishing, on (03)5633 1014 or email walhalla@tpg.com.au

The book launch will also feature the exhibition "a Stone upon a Stone", researched and curated by Raelene Marshall which concentrates on the history and heritage of dry stone walls in the local area and other parts of Victoria and New South Wales. Funded by The Department of Communication Information Technology and the Arts Visions of Australia and auspiced by Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West the award winning exhibition has spent the past eighteen months touring provincial shires in Victoria and New South Wales.
