Mayor's Message

Mayor's Message - 23 February 2006

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th February 2006 - Back to News

The arrival of the Queen’s Baton into our Shire this week is significant on a number of levels. It is a chance for our community and particularly our school children, to get involved in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games. It is an opportunity for everyone in our shire to take part in celebrations that focus on their community. And it is a reminder that as well as being part of our local area, we are part of a much larger family, an Australian community. The Commonwealth Games will be beamed around the world to an audience of millions. The spirit of unity that links the Commonwealth nations from around the globe is so important in times like these, where the divisions and differences between us seem to get so much attention.

Focusing on an issue closer to home, I want to reassure members of the Wonthaggi Pony Club that there are no plans by Council to take over the land that the Club currently occupies. These concerns seem to be the result of a recent story in the newspaper about considerations for a Botannical Garden in Wonthaggi. I would like to reiterate here that Council remain totally supportive of the Pony Club. Any suggestion that Council plans to interfere in the Club’s leasing arrangement of Crown Land is absolutely false.

Last Friday there were a number of announcements that were very exciting for our Shire. Minister Brumby visited San Remo and Newhaven and announced two separate grants; one to the Vietnam Veterans’ Museum and one to the Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre at Newhaven. In addition, a Federal Grant to the Veterans’ Museum was announced by Greg Hunt, Member for Flinders. It is great to see all levels of Government supporting John Methven and his committee, in planning and constructing this magnificent monument to those who served in Vietnam. I applaud those who worked so hard on putting these grant applications together and congratulate them on their success.
