Archaeological Dig At Franklin Street BridgeAn archaeological dig was recently conducted at the Franklin Street bridge in Traralgon to ensure that there are no aboriginal artefacts which could be damaged when the current timber bridge is By Latrobe City - 21st July 2008 - Back to News replaced with a new reinforced concrete bridge.
Latrobe City coordinator design services, Les Hilton, said that in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 an aboriginal cultural study of Traralgon creek has been conducted and a cultural heritage management plan put in place.
"The field study has shown a very low likelihood of aboriginal artefacts but the management plan needs to be put in place in case anything of significance is discovered when excavations are undertaken," Mr Hilton said.
The new reinforced concrete bridge will be longer than the existing timber bridge and will require the excavation of the south bank of Traralgon Creek for 20 meters upstream and 30 meters downstream of Franklin Street.
