Effectively Assist Young People Through The Crises And Challenges Of Their Lives

A new conference for the future of our youth

By Dally Messenger III - 31st October 2002 - Back to News

Attention: Gippsland Teachers, Parents, Social and Youth workers, Counsellors and allies Professionals. You will never get another Conference like this one! David Oldfield MA of Yale (No! not the politician!!) speaking about how best to assisting young people through times of change.

Recently on the John Fain Program, ABC Radio, there was a stimulating discussion on how teachers (and others) can effectively assist young people through the crises and challenges of their lives.

The discussion centred on how many children are in pain and confusion - and how teachers, parents and other professionals need great support in responding to their need.

Next year (April 28 to May 7, 2003) the College of Celebrancy is bringing to Australia the world¹s foremost authority on assisting young people through this period of change. He does this through Rites of Passage, Rituals and Ceremonies. David "cut his teeth" in this area working with young people in juvenile detention centres, psychiatric units, drug rehabilitation centres and normal schools! His mechanisms and strategies are developed and effective. To quote David Oldfield himself:

" We are of more service to people (and especially the young) when we create occasions for them to find their own solutions to life¹s dilemmas than when we try to solve their problems ourselves."

"The Journey is not a prevention program; it does not try to stop anything from happening. Rather, it seeks to create a sanctioned, supportive environment, which honours the events of an adolescent¹s life for what they are, and invites them as individuals and as a generation, to find the meaning in the mess of their experience."

I've been to several of David's seminars both here in Australia and in the USA. He is a truly inspiring, knowledgeable, and a positive speaker and leader. Gippsland people will just love him, I know.

We feel very fortunate to be able to bring him here, not just for celebrants, but for everyone working with the young, especially in the light of Australia¹s problems with youth suicide, depression, disconnection, unemployment and drugs.
