Liberals To Revitalise Country Tourism

A Liberal Government will revitalise country tourism, marketing country Victoria’s best attractions to a wider field of would-be visitors, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

Mr Davis said tourism in country Victoria has long been neglected in terms of marketing funding and the development of tourism routes.

A Liberal Government would dedicate at least half of the Tourism Victoria marketing budget to the sustained promotion of country Victoria.

"Victorians need to know there are many places within Victoria that are worthwhile holiday destinations, without having to travel interstate or overseas to spend their money," Mr Davis said.

"In addition to Tourism Victoria’s national and international campaign, a Liberal Government will concentrate efforts on encouraging Victorians to holiday closer to home.

"We will improve the marketing of less visited country attractions, paying particular attention to Daylesford, Lake Eildon, Castlemaine/Maldon, Healesville, Avoca, Marysville, Dandenong Ranges, the Goldfields towns, the Gippsland Lakes, Rutherglen, the Shipwreck Coast, Port Fairy, Sunraysia and the Murray, the Grampians and winter sports regions."

Mr Davis said Tourism Victoria would be re-structured to include new positions on the Board which would be filled by country Victorians.

"The Tourism Victoria re-structure will bring country Victorian tourism up-to-date with modern holiday practices and marketing initiatives," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will extend the attraction of the Great Ocean Road by linking it to other beautiful regions.

"We will establish the Great Southern Coastal Road touring route, along the Great Ocean Road to Wilson’s Promontory, via the Bellarine Peninsula, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and the South Gippsland coast.

"This will allow other regions close to the Great Ocean Road to benefit from the millions of tourists who traverse this section of road every year, by giving tourists extra travelling options."

Mr Davis said for those who enjoy walking as a recreational activity, a Liberal Government would also develop Long Walk attractions.

"A Liberal Government is committed to improving tourism in country Victoria," he said
