Monash Out Of Control

Under-handed tactics spark calls for a review of the faculty

By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News

The under-handed tactics of Monash’s engineering faculty have sparked calls for a review of the faculty. The faculty announced that it would close Gippsland’s engineering school. The decision was made after a number of secret meetings.

"The James Bond-style tactics of Monash used in this decision highlights the total lack of transparency in university decision-making processes," according to Andrew Schmidt, president of Monash University Gippsland Student Union.

"The Victorian review of university governance highlighted significant concerns in the way universities are governed and its decision-making processes," said Mr. Schmidt,

"Conducting secret meetings and not consulting with students, staff or the community is particularly damning of how major decisions are made."

"The Student Union, in its submission to the review, highlighted that transparency and accountability are essential elements of good governance, especially in public institutions like Monash University, " he said.

"Monash University must be transparent, accountable and open when making major decisions. No students or staff were consulted about it and yet they have to live with it, " said Mr. Schmidt.

"The Victorian government must intervene and undertake an immediate and independent review of Monash’s Faculty of Engineering," Mr. Schmidt said.
